Agoraphobia Information
Agoraphobia is a fear of a place/event where escape is impossible or when help is unavailable. The word "Agoraphobia" is an English adaptation of the Greek words agora (αγορά) and phobos (φόβος), and literally translates to "a fear of the marketplace." Often associated with Anxiety Disorder Agoraphobics will often have a "fear of fear" coming from a fear that they may have a Panic/Anxiety Attack in public where there are no means of easy escape often causing fear resulting in a "fear of fear". Agoraphobics will be anxious in unfamiliar places or places where they lack control resulting in avoidance of public places and an inability to leave their "safe place".
Agoraphobia Causes
The most common cause for Agoraphobia is Anxiety. Although there are many different theories on the specific cause of Agoraphobia such as, family factors, personality factors, biological factors, attachment, spatial, social and feminist researches are being carried out.
Agoraphobia Treatments
There are several different treatments for Agoraphobia such as a gradual process of Graduated Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and medication such as anti-anxiety and anti-depressants. The treatment of Agoraphobia is similar to the treatment of Anxiety Disorders.
